Austin’s burgeoning music scene is near legendary and with each new festival that gets added or artist lineup that is featured, it has quickly made the bucket list as a top touring destination for many music enthusiasts the world over. In Austin, the degrees of separation between musicians and non-musicians are thin indeed and the levels of creative artistry in its most expressive, innovative forms are at their finest. May it ever be known, Austin is indeed a groovy, bluesy city!
Yet, another rising scene in Austin that is worthy of note is the ever-popular, food scene. With food trucks numbering in the hundreds and restaurants on nearly every corner, Austin is a food destination that few other cities can rival! Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the results are in and Austin, TX has officially become a “foodie city“!
Prominent and popular food blogger/ photographer, Jane Koko who is the editor for “A Taste of Koko” has been delegated the difficult task of taste-testing many of the upcoming eateries here in Austin. Her honest assessment of the culinary creations from some of the nation’s finest chefs has won over the hearts and appetites of her many fans and followers, whose numbers are in the thousands. She recently announced at a food truck meet and greet that Austin was seeing 100 + new food trucks and restaurants added just this year, with no letting up or sign of a slow-down. This too follows through to one inevitable conclusion – that Austin, TX is officially now a foodie city.

In a recent Travel and Leisure article, Austin ranked # 12 as a top food city in the country, ranking just behind New York at # 10 and Houston at # 1 but out-pacing that of Chicago at # 13, New Orleans at # 15, San Francisco at # 19 and Seattle at # 20 (source). In December of 2014, Austin ranked # 6 in the country but was # 1 in the Lonestar State (source). America and the world over for the matter was recently made aware of Austin’s place as a foremost contender for top food city entitlement when one of its own, Master Chef Paul Qui was named the “Most Talented Chef in TOP CHEF History” after winning the show’s season finale. There can be no doubt, that Austin, TX is officially a top foodie city!
With restaurants numbering in the thousands, food trucks pacing in the hundreds and an innumerable host of hungry patrons all too willing to keep the Austin food culture alive, there can be no mistake that Austin is officially and apologetically, a foodie city! The blissful benefit of this new-found status is that there is no shortage of different foods!
This in itself has given rise to an eclectic blend of food cultures that together have formed and created a sort of “food fusion” that takes food tasting to a whole new level like that of Mexican-Asian to further push the boundaries of the culinary craft in all its glory. With so much to offer and choose from, this equally has brought culinary competitiveness to new extremes. With countless cook-offs and best chef competitions, there exists an air of friendly rivalry in Austin with each establishment vying to outdo the other in the hopes of winning “the best burger“, or “the best BBQ” award. What this simply means to the rest of us is that the food is oh so good!
However, to balance the scales, the detriment of this new found foodie status, if it can be called that – is that there is practically no way to experience, let alone try all the variety of restaurants and food trucks that Austin has to offer. There are just too many to choose from! So, the wayfaring, hungry patron has to decide on what he or she is craving, the genre of food he or she is curious to try, travel time, cost-to-value, etc to even begin taste-tapping into the untapped reserves of Austin’s restaurant store houses.
